The Ends Principle- Second Design Principle

Problem Based Learning, Problem Based Assessments, Personalized Learning… these are just a few types of learning that is happening in schools right now. What they all have in common and what educators hope for is provided students with authentic activities. Authentic activities provide students with the opportunity to engage in learning that will help prepare them for the future. Educators create their projects with their best intentions. However, when authentic activities are implemented into the classroom “their context is inevitably transmuted; they become classroom tasks and part of school culture.” So what can we do to ensure our students learning is moving in a forward direction and that we are allowing them the opportunity to engage in real authentic activities? How can we move students who are learning in the saber-tooth curriculum era classrooms into future ready students? Well one thing we can do to help our students is to provide them with PICKLE. We want them to be problem solvers, informational users, community participants, knowledgeable, literate, and ethical decision makers.

  1. Hi Liz,
Do you teach in FCPS? I think you are right about PICKLE- thought to me it sounds like POG, and hopefully we are on the right track with some of our current instructional practices. And we must figure out a way to make authentic learning more visible and honest so they don't get lost in classroom tasks and school culture.
